Life After Mr Big: Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, 60, says there's a lot more dating to be had after finding your 'happily ever after'

Her collection of essays inspired the hit TV show Sex and the City, which proved to a generation of women it was in deed possible to find love in a big city.

And now, author Candace Bushnell, 60, has revealed that despite the allure of finding Mr Right - or 'Mr Big' as it were - sometimes things don't work out that way.

Speaking to Today on Thursday to promote her new book Is There Still Sex in the City, Candice said while people strive to find a lasting relationship in their 20s, if it doesn't work out, dating in your 50s can be just as fun.

'The book is about my journey, and it has a new group of friends, and it's all about what I can the new midlife,' Candace told Today hosts, Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight.

Candace said her new book women something similar to what her first novel did, when it was first published in 1997.

The 60-year-old said one of the key messages in the tome, which is part memoir and part fiction, is that there is life after 'the happily ever after'.

She said one of the reasons why she decided to write it is because there is such a tremendous amount of pressure among women to maintain their youth.

'After a certain age, women really feel invisible. And after the age of 50, it's almost like you don't exist and there is a lot of pressure on women to stay young,' she explained.

But according to Candace, one of the great things about navigating life after 50 is being able to find out how you fit into the world again.
