Nissan has put a price on the all-new 2020 Versa subcompact sedan and the increase over the previous-generation model is substantial.

The third-generation Versa starts from $15,625 for the base Versa S 5MT model, including a $895 destination charge. Factor that in and the entry-level 2020 Versa is $2,270 more expensive than its predecessor.

In fairness, buyers do get much more for the money, starting with the redesigned exterior and interior of the 2020 Versa which are both massive improvements over the 2019 model. The new model also gains new tech including the available Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of safety systems (standard on Versa SV and SR).

The 2020 Nissan Versa offers three grades: S, SV, and the sporty-flavored SR. Only the base model comes with a standard five-speed manual transmission, with the other two offering an Xtronic CVT as the only gearbox choice. The CVT is optional on the entry-level Versa S.

Regardless of the trim level, the only engine on offer is a new, more powerful 1.6-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine rated at 122 hp and 114 lb-ft (155 Nm) of torque. Fuel economy with the Xtronic transmission is rated at 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. With the standard five-speed manual, fuel economy ratings are 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.

New standard features introduced on the 2020 Versa include a “floating” 7.0-inch touchscreen audio display, remote keyless entry, standard push button start, and a D-shaped steering wheel. Also standard are the Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, Streaming audio via Bluetooth, RearView Monitor, Siri Eyes Free, AM/FM audio system with four speakers and USB, and Hands-free Text Messaging Assistant.

Available equipment includes heated front seats, 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, and Automatic Climate Control, among other things.
