The beauty therapist, 21, burst into tears as she and the Irish rugby player, 24, were announced as the winner of the ITV2 dating series following eight weeks in the villa.

Delighted Vanessa, who shares Amber with her partner Leon, 60, said she has watched her bundle of joy turn from a girl into a woman in front of the nation.

She explained: 'I think Greg’s absolutely lovely. When I went into the villa he was the second person to hug me. I could tell in his hug he was so genuine.

'He’s absolutely gorgeous in real life. His accent is just to die for. He’s welcome in our house any time. “I’m sure they will go from strength to strength. They have taken it slowly.

'She seemed to open up to him pretty much straight away. She’s only 21, he’s 24. I just want them to be happy. Hopefully it will be a long time. I think they will make it work if they want to.'

After being announced the winners the pair were given an envelope each - Amber’s was empty, but Greg’s contained £50,000.

The hunk immediately confirmed he would be splitting the cash with his love interest, and her mum said she had 'no doubt' that he would.

Vanessa gushed: 'Honestly, it’s just been amazing, I’m so pleased for her that she’s seen it to the end. She’s been on such a journey. We’ve watched her grow from a girl to a woman.

'She’s just been herself, she’s been exactly the same. We’re all so, so proud of her. I spoke to her last night, she was happy. She couldn’t believe it.

'We were all at Stack (a complex of bars and restaurants) in Newcastle last night and the support from the Geordie people has been amazing. She’s had so much support up here. It just doesn’t seem real.'

The model's journey in the villa has been far from plain sailing as on her arrival, she was targeted by social media trolls.

Vanessa, from Gateshead, said on the online abuse: 'I think that just goes with the territory, people will always have an opinion. I don’t care what Brenda in Bournemouth thinks. These are people that I don’t even know.

'Amber is a strong, independent woman. I think what turned it around for her was when she picked Greg. I think the whole country were waiting with bated breath to find out who she would pick.'

Vanessa believes the public changed their perception of her after watching how she dealt with being dumped by firefighter Michael Griffith.

The Scouse later admitted to still having feelings for her but Amber chose to pair up with Greg, from Limerick, Ireland, instead.

Vanessa detailed: 'If she was at home I know for a fact that she would not have even entertained Michael. But being on Love Island is so different.

'Everybody, including her dad, were punching the air when she picked Greg. I was bursting with pride at the way she handled the situation. I don’t think a lot of people would have been that dignified.

'It was hard to watch, it was heart-breaking. But the way she conducted herself made me feel so proud. I had mixed emotions.'

The champ's mother also said that before she entered the villa, she was interested in launching her own candles and essential oils company.

She added: 'I don’t know if she’s going to continue with that. She’s probably had a lot of time to think in there.'

Vanessa has said she is not sure when Amber is going to be back in the North East, but said the family are planning to have a party when she returns home.
