Jaguar’s First Production D-Type Heading To UK Concours Of Elegance

The first production example of the iconic Jaguar D-Type is heading at the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court, UK, September 6-8 alongside several historic Jaguars, Ferraris and Aston Martin Zagatos.

The specific example of the D-Type is considered to be one of the most original in existence, retaining its matching numbers engine, transmission, and chassis, including the front subframe and monocoque center section.

The body retains its 1970s black respray in its original condition, which was applied to replace an in-period American racing livery -matte dark blue on white with five vertical stripes running down the length of the car.

Chassis XKD 509 was privately raced at events worldwide, and has achieved many victories and podium finishes, adding to its historic significance.

The first D-Type will be joined by the 15th E-Type, which originally was one of the six display cars at the 1961 Scottish Motor Show. Back in 1976, the car was dismantled with the intention of getting a full restoration but the E-Type was left in pieces until 2013.

It then was subjected to a 3,000-hour restoration, during which it retained the majority of its original parts. The E-Type is finished in the original Pearl Grey, also making it the world’s only 1961 example finished in the particular shade.

“Alongside this gathering of some of the most significant Jaguar cars ever built, we’ve got a display of one of each of the 19 Aston Martin Zagato models built, a collection of the most important Bentleys ever – including the first car to win at Le Mans back-to-back – and a whole host of other icons from the likes of Rolls-Royce, Lotus and McLaren,” said Andrew Evans, Concours of Elegance Director.
