Idris Elba opened up about his new film Beast and shared some of his DJ skills on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The 49-year-old is best known as an actor, but he is also an accomplished musician and DJ, having performed with the likes of Jay-Z and Paul McCartney.

He was quizzed by Fallon about the perfect songs to play in certain situations while discussing the film, debuting in theaters August 19.

Elba plays a man who brings his two daughters to Africa, where he first met his late wife, when their lives are turned upside down.

'It's about a family that go back to a small village in West Africa to mourn the death of a loved one, my ex-wife and my childrens' mother,' he explained.

'We find out that the village is like empty and it's been ravaged by something or someone and it's terrible,' he added.

'Basically, they find themselves cornered by a rogue lion who has been sort of broken from their pride by poachers,' Elba continued.

He added the movie is, 'basically a survival story,' adding his character and his daughters, 'are having a tough time dealing with the death of their mum, so it's really about the beast coming for them, the beast of mourning, the beast of family ties and how that all comes together 

'We based that lion in the movie on a lion that's been extinct for a long time, it's called a Barbary lion,' he said.

'It was a huge lion, much bigger than the average lion, so for the film we just amplified the fact that this was really big,' Elba added. 

They also shared a laugh over the stuntman Owen who was dressed in a makeshift 'tiger' suit, which Fallon joked was the 'scariest thing I've seen in my life.'

Fallon also asked the accomplished DJ to put his skills to the test and reveal what songs would be perfect to play in a variety of situations.

First up was getting dumped, which he said was Mark Morrisson's Return of the Mack, while suggesting If This World Were Mine by Luther Vandross for someone who wanted to propose marriage.

When asked what he'd play to 'psyche yourself up' for possibly a big job interview, he started singing, 'Allow me to re-introduce myself' from Jay-Z's Public Service Announcement... but Fallon thought he was singing The Humpty Dance.

When asked what the one final song he'd play before the venue closed, he revealed he'd play Party Up (Up In Here) by DMX.
