EXCLUSIVE 'I'd get notes from girls meant for him': TV producer Rob Thomas reveals his unlikely friendship with Matchbox Twenty's frontman and the singer's starring role in iZombie

American showrunner Rob Thomas, 53, is behind binge-worthy series Veronica Mars and iZombie - both available to stream on Stan.

But the producer and director has been innocently confused for the former Matchbox Twenty frontman by the same name for the last decade.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Rob said: 'I've gotten to know him [singer Rob Thomas] over the years, because so much of our stuff has gotten confused. We will direct message each other when something lands on our plate that was clearly intended for the other.'

Author Rob first made waves in 2004 for his involvement in the critically-acclaimed TV series Veronica Mars, while Rob, 47, rose to international fame with Matchbox Twenty’s debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You in 1996.

In 2005, the singer became even more of a household name by releasing the first of four studio albums as a solo artist.

'Back in the Matchbox Twenty days, I’d get notes from girls who would say something like “Rob, you can push me around at 3AM anytime you want”, and I was like “oh, this person does not mean me. This person was looking for the other Rob Thomas”,’ he joked.

Matchbox Twenty released the track titled 3AM in 1996.

Rob said he's creatively embraced the case of mistaken identity in his shows over the years, including having singer Rob act and perform in the second season finale of iZombie in 2016.

'We get it all the time, so yes it was a bit of an Easter egg for fans, and there was even a Rob Thomas mention in season three [2007] of Veronica Mars.’

‘The funny thing about that iZombie moment was when we asked Rob if he would be interested in doing it, we had no idea that he was a big iZombie fan,’ he said.

When the Lonely No More hit-maker received the script he apparently made a request to see the episodes between what was currently airing and the episode he would star in, because he wanted to avoid spoilers.

'It was the season finale and he didn’t want to read the script, because he didn't want it to spoil the show for him. I thought it was very funny.'
