John Legend returns to Dayton, Ohio to perform a surprise concert for victims of last week's tragic shooting

John Legend returned to his home state of Ohio for a surprise performance for the victims of the tragic shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

The 40 year old singer took to Instagram on Sunday night, sharing a photo of his impromptu performance.

He also took to his Instagram story to share a link to an Action Button where people can find out how to donate, volunteer or contact Congress.

'I just played a few songs to try to help bring comfort to some of the survivors of last week's tragedy in Dayton,' Legend began.

'My heart breaks for everyone who lost someone. I love how everyone rallies around one another during their time of grief,' he continued.

'But our nation should not keep putting ourselves through these preventable traumas. Let's fix it together,' Legend concluded.

Legend was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, which is roughly 30 miles northeast of Dayton.

At approximately 1:05 AM on August 4, gunman Connor Stephen Betts opened fire outside of the entrance to Ned Peppers Bar in Dayton. 

Using a 100-round drum magazine, Betts opened fire and killed nine people, injuring 27 others, with police acting quickly and killing the gunman just 32 seconds after the first shots rang out.

Legend's surprise concert come just days after his pointed comments about President Donald Trump.

''Our president is a flaming racist. He's a piece of s**t,' Legend said, following Trump's controversial comments about Baltimore, where he called the city a, ''disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.'

Legend added that the President says, 'piece of s**t all the time,' calling him, 'an evil f***ing canker sore on America's whole landscape.'
