How Bindi Irwin escaped the 'curse of the child star'

Share it:

It's an all too familiar tale of child stars going off the rails once they grow up.

But when it comes to Bindi Irwin, the 21-year-old daughter of the late 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin, she has only matured with grace and integrity.

Since appearing alongside her famous father on The Crocodile Hunter Diaries at just two-years of age, Bindi has gone on to become a household name around the world.

Bindi's first brush with fame came while appearing on their family show as baby.

It wasn't until 2006 that she started to became a star in her own right, after releasing a pop album and filming show, Bindi the Jungle Girl.

Her father Steve filmed many episodes of the 26-part wildlife documentary with her, but sadly passed away before it premiered on Discovery Kids in June 2007.

By the time it aired, Bindi had reduced millions around the world to tears after giving an emotional eulogy to her 'hero' father at his televised funeral in September, 2006.

Although the Sydney Morning Herald explained on Sunday that many believed the family would fade from the spotlight following his death, they did the opposite.

Bindi, under the love and guidance of her mother Terri, carved out her own career path, while continuing to promote the protection of wildlife.

In 2007, she fronted an American television special titled My Daddy the Crocodile Hunter, while releasing a pop song of the same title.

Around this time, she was announced as an ambassador for tourism Australia.

The following year, aged nine, following many other TV documentaries and a kids fitness DVD, Bindi won the Logie award for Most Popular New Female Talent.

'Sure, it was an intense performance, but it was impossible not be impressed,' SMH columnist Andrew Hornery said of her powerful acceptance speech.

During her younger years, Bindi didn't just present and sing, she also acted.

Most notably, she landed the lead in Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove, which was released in 2010, playing the role of Kirra, who tried to save a male orca.

Although each new venture continued to propel her stardom to new heights around the world, the Irwin's family values and close bond kept her grounded.

'You are the most beautiful woman I have ever known,' gushed Bindi in an open letter to Terri shared to Twitter on Mother's Day in 2018.

'Your strength, wisdom and kindness is what carries us all forward. You're my best friend and whole world. I love you. Forever.'

In 2015, Bindi landed possibly her biggest TV role to date.

The Australian star was announced as a participant on the latest season of Dancing With The Stars in America, and went on to win the show.

Over 14 million people across the U.S. watched her dance her way to victory, before later returning Down Under to much applause.

Throughout all of her ventures in the spotlight, Bindi has always brought the attention back to the Irwin family's Wildlife Warriors organisation.

Originally called the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, it was founded in 2002 to involve and educate in the protection of injured, threatened or endangered wildlife.

Which is something that led Bindi to finding partner, and fiancé, Chandler Powell.

The couple met in 2013, when the American wake-boarder went on a guided tour of the Irwin's Australia Zoo in Queensland.

At the time, the American, then 15, had no idea Bindi, then 14, would one day become his fiancee.

Following their chance meeting, Chandler wrote to Terri to ask her permission to chat to Bindi, with the couple then embarking on a long-distance relationship.

In July, Bindi and Chandler announced their engagement, with him relocating to Australia in recent years and joining in the family work at Australia Zoo.
