'We're trying to make people realise it's a valid medicine': Cannabis advocates believe chef Pete Evans becoming the face of the movement will harm their cause

He's been a vocal advocate for the benefits of medicinal cannabis and is producing a new documentary on the issue, called The Magic Plant.

The 46-year-old celebrity chef and My Kitchen Rules judge is also set to sit down with the Sunday Night program to discuss the issue as a special guest reporter.

But medicinal cannabis advocates have expressed concerns about Paleo Pete, who's health tips and diet plans have been the subject of immense scrutiny and controversy, becoming the face of the movement.

Speaking to news.com.au on Friday,  Lucy Haslam, a founding director of  Australia's medicinal cannabis advocacy group, United in Compassion (UIC), had some doubts.

'I'm afraid whatever his intentions are in this space, they'll be misconstrued,' she said.

'It would be good to have a celebrity in this space, but Pete invites controversy,' she added.

With filming well underway on his upcoming documentary, Pete has been using his Instagram to promote the legalisation of cannabis in Australia in recent months.

Courting controversy: Pete was recently producing cannabis oil in Florida where it is legal to do so. Taking to Instagram, he shared a selfie alongside fellow cannabis advocate Garyn Angel

'In one of my happy places,' he captioned a photo of himself standing in the middle of a cannabis farm in April.

Another photo, also taken in April, shows him posing for a selfie alongside one of the farm's workers, the cannabis plants visible in the background.

Pete has been very open for his love of medical cannabis and CBD, even producing his own cannabis oil during a trip to Florida, where medical marijuana is legal, for a scene in his new documentary.
