BMW X7 M50d Is Shockingly Fast, Shows Diesels Are Not Just For Economy

Those in the market for a BMW X7 will rarely, if ever, engage in red-light racing. Nevertheless, it’s good to know how capable the huge SUV is in a straight line in M50d, and that’s exactly what this video showcases.

Powering this X7 variant is a 3.0-liter inline-six that features four (yes, four) turbochargers. It pumps out a total of 394 HP and 560 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque and, according to BMW, offers enough grunt to propel it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a mere 5.4 seconds.

In this real-world test, with the launch control function engaged, the X7 recorded a best 0-62 mph time of 5.58-seconds, which is pretty impressive, particularly when you factor in its 5,423 lbs (2460 kg) weight. Sure, that’s not going to make you feel as though your face is being ripped off, but it’s certainly more than fast enough, unless you’re drag racing a supercar – which you won’t.

With the right pedal to the metal, the X7 powered through to a 162 mph (260 km/h) top speed. Again, a pretty theoretical issue given the speed limits, and sufficient even for those who have the luxury of rocketing down unrestricted pieces of the Autobahn. We’ve yet to sample the X7, but we can only imagine how it must feel, especially combined with the exceptional comfort Munich has endowed it with.
