SPOILER ALERT! What really happened in the Wentworth's nail-biting season seven finale and what it means for season eight

It was a nail-biting season seven finale of popular prison series Wentworth on Tuesday night.

Fans of the Logie-winning Foxtel drama were left stunned after an action-packed episode culminated in an unexpected twist.

The shocking return of Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson, who was believed to be dead for two seasons when she was buried alive, ended the final episode.

The last time The Freak was seen alive was when she was trapped in a box as Will Jackson buried her in a grave at the end of season five.

In season six, she appeared as hallucinations to a guilt-ridden Will, which prompted him to dig up her grave - only to discover a decomposing body.

But the final scene of season seven showed The Freak was actually alive and well, but laying low as she huddled around a fire plotting her revenge.

Pamela Rabe, who plays The Freak, will fully return in character during the eighth season of the hit series.

Kate Atkinson, who plays prison governor Vera Bennett, told the Herald Sun that the final scene revealing The Freak's return was top secret.

'There's a few other people in that scene, but they're all crew or writers or staff, so that no one would know The Freak was coming back. All it takes is one loose cannon. That was a very closed set,' she said.

Kate's character Vera also went through her fare share in the final episode, giving birth during a prison siege led by Sean Brody (Rick Donald) in an attempt to free Marie Winter (Susie Porter).

A trigger happy Sean shot and killed Kosta and Boomer’s mum, May.

Sean is eventually shot dead by Allie while Boomer is forced to put Liz down when she goes into a stroke from Locked-In Syndrome, bringing the body count to four.

Allie also shoots Marie in the leg, trapping her prison and forcing her into protection.

Meanwhile, Rita Connors, who is played by Leah Purcell, revealed she used to be an undercover police officer to Will.

She used her hacking skills to reveal that governor general Michael Heston, who was at the prison helping with hostage negotiations, was actually trying to free Marie from prison because she was blackmailing him.

The hacker was also put into protective custody, given the sensitive information she now knows.

Wentworth will return for an eighth season of 20 episodes that will be spread across two years in 2020 and 2021.
