Karl Stefanovic was dumped from the Today show late last year.

And he’s set to make a comeback to Channel Nine on August 12, as the second season of This Time Next Year premieres across the country.

It’s an emotional return for the 44-year-old, who tells nine.com.au that he ‘shed tears’ on the set of the emotional series.

‘This Time Next Year is an absolute joy to work on, and I’m not going to lie, I shed a tear or two,’ he told the publication.

Karl added:  ‘I’m really proud and excited to be hosting series two of This Time Next Year. I’ve met some truly inspiring Australians who will warm the hearts of viewers’.

It comes after claims the TV host could be making a comeback on Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes.

As reported by Woman’s Day, a TV ‘insider’ revealed that Nine is secretly planning to return the morning show ‘bad boy’ to the long-running current affairs program.

‘Nine has a master plan for Karl,’ the insider said.

The alleged source also claimed that 2GB broadcaster Ray Hadley has been putting his weight behind the push to return Karl to prime time TV.

‘The only reason Karl has a lifeline [with the network] is because of Ray. He’s very close to Nine bosses an has been pivotal in Karl’s comeback.’

This Time Next Year’s second season was announced in October 2018, two months before Nine executives decided to replace Karl as host of the Today show.

It’s believed Karl’s multi-million dollar contract with the network does not expire until the end of 2020, but it is unclear what else is planned for him.
