First Customer-Owned SSC Tuatara To Be Revealed At Monterey Car Week

The very first production-spec SSC Tuatara will be delivered to its customer at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering during next month’s Monterey Car Week.

The Tuatara has been a long time coming and the announcement of the vehicle’s presence during Monterey Car Week comes shortly after SSC said that production of its long-awaited hypercar had commenced. It will also come 12 months after the ‘new’ Tuatara was originally unveiled last year.

Powering the Tuatara is a 5.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine pumping out 1750 hp when running on E85. When filled up with 91 octane fuel, peak power is lowered to 1350 hp. SSC has bold ambitions for its hypercar and believes it has a good chance of reaching 300 mph (483 km/h), putting it up with the likes of the Koenigsegg Regera and Hennessey Venom F5.

Mated to the hypercar’s potent engine is a seven-speed transmission with hydraulically-driven components to provide lightning-fast gear changes. Power is sent exclusively through the rear wheels so launching the Tuatara off the line could prove to be quite a challenge.

SSC is particularly proud of the Tuatara’s exterior design and claims it has a drag coefficient of just 0.279. The company believes this puts it in the perfect position to ensure the Tuatara is the first street-legal production car to hit the 300 mph mark.

It’s unclear how much customers are paying for their Tuatara’s but prices are thought to start at around $2 million.
