Current Chevrolet Malibu To Get Update In 2020, Bite The Dust In 2024

Chevrolet appears determined to keep the Malibu mid-size sedan around at least until 2024 – but that’s about it, as it will allegedly not get a direct successor after that.

AutoNews reports that Chevrolet’s future plans do not include a new generation Malibu after the current model reaches the end of its life cycle in five years. Instead, it will be replaced indirectly by a new electric model, which is most likely one of the 20 new EVs GM promised to launch by 2023.

The current Malibu is only one very few sedans that survived the recent cuts within GM and the only one carrying the Chevrolet badge. The mid-size sedan will also receive a refresh sometime around 2022 before entering the last phase of its life.

Replacing the Malibu with an electric sedan makes sense, especially since sales of the current model appear to have slowed down (despite a refresh for the 2019 model year) and the market’s growing appetite for zero-emissions vehicles.

Chevrolet currently offers the Malibu with two powertrain options: a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit with 160 HP paired to a CVT and a 2.0-liter turbo four with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Customers can also opt for the RS trim, which adds sporty touches to the exterior, such as 18-inch alloys, dual exhausts and a black grille, plus more standard gear, but it’s available only with the base 160 HP engine.
