Australian Survivor star and big wave surfer Ross Clarke-Jones has opened up about the terrifying moment he almost drowned while surfing at Portugal's Nazaré.

Speaking on the show on Tuesday, the 53-year-old admitted that he counts his blessings after slamming over rocks, while surfing at the notorious spot in February last year. 

'When you come off one of these waves, it's like being hit by 315 cars in a row on a highway,' Ross told his teammates on the show.

After being given a fake newspaper with random facts about them, Ross explained what happened. 

'These are 80-100 ft waves. I wiped out really badly, I got dragged along the bottom and came up right against the rocks, I got slammed over them,' Ross said. 

'Fifteen minutes I was in there, no one could see me, I was so close to drowning.'

He added that he's thankful he's still alive and with his family. 

'It makes me appreciate so much more, get to go home to a beautiful family and that's what life is about,' Ross said. 

Ross is known for his lengthy surfing career and is close friends and surfing partners with legendary Australian surfer, Tony Ray.

Meanwhile on Australian Survivor on Tuesday, Olympic gold medalist Steven Bradbury, 45, was sent home. 

It came after the champions team were sent to tribal council. 

'I think everybody voted for me tonight,' Steven said, as he left the show.
